Our client was struggling with a solution to automatically assemble a small (approximately1/2 inch) gear box at the rate of 50 gear boxes per hour. Our conceptual design won Industrial Services, Inc. the opportunity to provide an assembly line consisting of 5 work cells to assemble and test the gear box.
Throughout the project we worked with our customer to develop the most cost effective and robust machinery to build the gear boxes at the desired rate.
You can probably appreciate the miniature components and precision required by the project. For example, the ball bearings that make up the race consists of 17 balls that are .0046 in diameter. The feeding and installation of the 3 gears required us to not only orient the gears but also provide a reliable method to guarantee proper engagement.
A close examination of the photographs will reveal the almost sub miniature size of the components. Gears less than 1/2” in diameter, balls less than .0050", screws with insertion tolerances less than .003".
Without a doubt this project was a challenge for Industrial Services, Inc. but we were able to complete the project within our original budget and satisfy our customer.
